President Paul Biya, who has ruled Cameroon for 43 years voted at the polling station situated at Government Primary School, Bastos on Sunday, October 12, 2025 for this year’s Presidential Election. The Cameroon leader who is 92 years of age, and has been in power for 43 years voted in a bid to extend his rule to 50 years. If elected, it will be his eighth term in office. Incumbent Paul Biya had nine other challengers seeking to unseat him at the helm of the nation. Initially, there were 12 candidates validated by the Constitutional Council for the October 12, 2025 elections, but two candidates withdrew and threw their weight behind other opposition candidates.
After the Sunday October 12 polls, vote counting is under way in Cameroon amidst controversies surrounding the outcome, as supporters of both the opposition and the ruling party each claims victory.
At the close of polls on Sunday, Atanga Nji Paul, Minister of Territorial Administration granted a press conference to both national and international media. He intimated that presidential election went on hitch-free nationwide, with no major incident to affect the outcome of the results. He called on Cameroonians, political stakeholders, and especially candidates to remain calm and wait for the proclamation of results. The final result would be known within 15 days of the vote. He promised the heavy arm of the law on those publishing result trends on social media and unauthorised platforms, arguing that only the Constitutional Council has the legal mandate to publish results after receiving them from the vote counting commissions.
While vote counting is ongoing, Cameroonians hold their breath, though going about their daily activities. Meanwhile, some opposition parties that fielded candidates are in turmoil with declarations, denials and counter-declarations about the imminent outcome of the polls.
