Prof Victor Mbarika, President of the Board of Trustees and Founder of the ICT University, has matched his words with actions by donating to the media in Cameroon. On Tuesday, May 12, 2026, a colossal sum of FCFA 5 million was distributed to some media organs and associations of Journalists in Cameroon.
The donation proper done at the ICT University Campus in Messassi, Yaounde came to transform into concrete reality, a promise made earlier by the ICT University Founder, Professor Mbarika. The erudite educationists who sees the media as a veritable partner of societal development had promised a special support fund to media organs in Cameroon in particular and Africa at large.
The high-brow donation event was preceded by a roundtable discussion where ICT experts dwelled on the realities of Artificial Intelligence in the profession.
The benefactor, Prof Mbarika speaking to participants through zoom, underscored the importance of the media as an integral part in the development of any organization. He opined that the media has contributed enormously to pushing the ICT University to another level. He intimated that the ICT University has initiated a special support fund with the help of partners to support media organs in Cameroon and Africa.
Prof Mbarika stated, “We appreciate the work of journalists in Cameroon. On behalf of ICT University, I salute the role of media practitioners in Cameroon. In this light, we are launching a special support fund for media organs in Cameroon to enable them to carry out their duties with much ease. I encourage media organs to continue with the good work they are doing as it goes a long way to contribute to the development and growth of our country Cameroon.”
During the roundtable discussions, Prof Emmanuel Tonye, the Vice chancellor of the ICT University said the conference main objective was to pave the way for Journalists in Cameroon to get used to the Artificial Intelligence era, which is a great revolution, and postulate in making it a workable tool in improving journalism. He called on journalists to embrace AI and not to be afraid of it, insisting that it has come to ease their work of information dissemination. “We organized this conference to draw the attention of media men on the trend artificial intelligence is taking. The conference is to bring to their knowledge of the role artificial intelligence can play in making their job easier and more professional. So we are encouraging them not to be afraid of this era but to use it as a stepping stone for growth,” Professor Tonye stated. He added that the conference was to appreciate the media men for their enormous contribution to nation building and national integration, insisting that it was thanks to the media organs in Cameroon that ICT University has become very popular.
Speaking to the Press shortly after receiving their special support , Viban Jude, the National President of the Cameroon English Speaking Journalists, CAMASEJ, said the sum of FCFA 500 000 handed to the association will go a long way to empower and build the capacities of the members of the association. “At a time when the press in Cameroon is faced with economic challenges, the support of institutions as such serves as a booster to our activities. CAMASEJ, which is the umbrella association for English- speaking journalists in the country, is grateful for this support from ICT University, and it will go along to boost our activities,” Viban Jude noted. “The Confab we attended here today serves as an eye-opener that we can use AI for growth as media organs instead of seeing it as an opponent,” Viban concluded.
Meanwhile, Evelyn Mengue, Présidente de l’Union de la Presse Francophone, section Cameroun, UPF, saluted the efforts of ICT University to empower the media. “The support we have received here comes to reassure us that the work we are doing is being seen and recognized. We thank ICT University for this support as it will go a long way to foster our activities.”
